A great project that I did with the kids was to create a big book based on a Fairy Tale. The students had to rewrite a fairy tale changing certain elements of the tale, but keeping the essence of the story the same. You can see a copy of the task sheet by clicking on the link.
I was really pleased with their results. One of the things about the class that I teach, is that there are a high number of students with English as a second language. This was a great task for them, as it gave them some excellent scaffolding to write a story, which enabled them to be successful with the task.
We decided then to turn these books into talking books. We took photos of every page of the book they had created. We downloaded the photos into i-photo. We then imported the photos from i-photo to i-movie. The students recorded themselves reading each page of the book onto i-movie. They included transitions and music to add a bit of glamor to their book. They were really proud of their results.
We were lucky enough to have four macs in the classroom. I stepped through the process on how to create a book using i-movie and how to import the photos, record the sound, edit the clips etc. with the first four students. Those four students then taught four new students, who in-turn taught another four students and so on.
The students took about an hour to take take photos of their book and turn it into a movie.
Most of the audio was recorded in the classroom with 23 other students working quietly on another task. Whenever someone was ready to record, they would say "Quiet on the set". As you can hear from Penny's video, the students were very respectful of their fellow classmate who was recording their book and didn't say or make any noise while the book was being recorded.
